Research-Timed analysis Music video

0:00-0:04

The music video at the beginning starts of with a black screen which transitions into the main music video using a quick fade. The screen transfers to a wide shot of a dull empty living room. This can contribute to the enigma code as there is an element of mystery as to where the singer is. The camera slowly zooms into the room which creates more tension as you question why is the room empty?

0:04-0:07
The scene changes to a dark empty corridor. The hallway is centralised in the middle of the screen as the window and the light in the middle of the room is the only source of light. The dark scenery and abandonment creates tension and has inter textual links towards horror films.

0:07-0:11

The camera then cuts to another room which has a old dirty mattress and a white sofa. Again, the room is lit up by the one window which is in the centre of the screen. The empty rooms creates connotations that perhaps nobody lives in the house anymore. The mis-en-scene creates a sense of loneliness .

0:11 -0:20
The music begins to play and shows a young girl in a nude leotard. The lyrics 'party girls dont get hurt cant feel anything' this has connotations to drinking alcohol. She is seen stand on the door frame with a direct mode of address making the video more serious as her body language suggest ‘we’ have entered her home. The nude leotard links towards Laura Mulvery “male gaze” as slot of skin is shown this is when the audience is put into the perspective of a heterosexual male. However, because it is a young girl it may have been used to make the viewers feel uncomfortable as though they’re intruding her privacy (home).
0:20-0:22
She then jumps on to the floor switching into a close up of the back of her legs. ‘I push it down push it down’ linking to Godwin’s theory that lyrics will make references to the visuals on the screen. The camera then pans up her leg to reflect her standing up straight.

0.22-0.30
They use a steady cam to pan around the girl as she dances on the floor. The room is a pale green which creates a grim and dirty effect on the room. The camera is held at a mid shot enabling the audience to see the girls facial expressions. She jerks her body in time to the lyrics 'i feel the love'.

0.30-0.32

The camera pans keeping Maddie (girl dancer ) in the middle of the screen as she sit on the sofa.

0.32- 0.53

She tills her head at T=0.32 on time with the beat which switches the camera angle to the right creating a creppy atmosphere. On beat 'one two three drink' she is seen lifting her arm up conveying she is portarying someone who is drinking and getting drunk 'til i lose count'The panning continues moving to the left and right following her as she dances around the room. Her movements of her dance movers are strange and chaotic whic has connotations to her being drunk.

0.53-0.56

The wide shot through the door frame showing the the surroundings and the dancer on her knees can convey she is trapped in the house the camera then pans towards the dancer.
0.56-0.58

Close ups of her feet again as she drags her feet like a dog.
0.58-1.00

The close up of her face (for a split second) makes it harder for the audience to gather the dancers emotions which creates enigma.

 1.00-1.31
The camera continues to pan around her as she jumps around the room. The close up of her chaotic body movements as she is seen dropping of a sofa, doing a cartwheel and pirouettes. The crazy dancing links to how alcoholics are intoxicated they do thinks that but them in harm (physically and mentally).

1.31-1.34
The mid close up showing her facial expression (smiling with eyes wide open) linking to her being crazy making the audience ore interested as they question whats going to happen next.

1.34-1.36
The camera pans from behind the dancer as it chases her. This makes the movement look faster as she is seen being very energetic and creates a sense of urgency as though something may happen.

1.36-1.39
She sits at a small dinning table and the camera has a close up of her face infront of her as though the audience is sitting infront of her at the table. She looks emotionless as she has a direct mode of address and has no facial expression creating enigma as she may lash out at any moment.

1.39- 1.49

The camera pans around her sitting at the table. The music video has a green undertone making the room look dirty. The lyrics ‘keep my glass full until morning light’ conveys the actor is likely to act worse during the music video. The colour green also links to health thus reflects on how her body is very unhealthy.

1.47-2.36

Maddie walks into a slightly saturated room which links to frustration and warning. The grey colours on the walls and floor links to dampness and blandness as they room looks empty and boring. The wide shot of Maddie doing a split conveys shows the setting as it look old and damp.Everytime Sia(the singer) goes into the loud chorus Maddies dances become chaotic conveying the side effects of the alcohol is being portrayed through her dancing.

2.36-2.50

The camera stops at a wide shot as Maddie walks out of the camera view. The camera pans into a different room showing Maddie in a dark hallway dancing.

2.50-3.08
It then zooms towards the dancer and pans backwards back into the living room.Panning into a close up of Maddie at the window majority of the shot is white conveying coldness and emptiness. This is highlight through maddies exaggerated  facial expressions making the audience feel uncomfortable.

3.08-3.22
The fast movement of Maddie dancing around in the room makes the video look chaotic.

3.22-3.26

Maddie is laying on the floor with a high camera angle looking down at her making the scene look more dramatic as it can imply her drunkenness. As the camera pans backwards.

3.26-3.51

Maddie is at the door frame smiling with a dark surrounding. The room with her In is lit up.This creates a intense setting as it has conventions to a horror film.As the camera pans away she is seen curtsying repetitively creating a creepy atmosphere. The use of curtseying is to show respect to the higher class this conveys she acknowledges her social class being a (struggler) and looks at the audience as superior.
