Preliminary task
I created a music video with my peers to the song ‘Unfinished
sympathy’ by Massive attack. The video was filmed on a Steadicam following
vocalist Shara Nelson as she walks along the pavement with a direct mode of
address as the audience acknowledges her surroundings ( dad walking with son ,disabled
man on a skateboard, people on the phone ,homeless men drinking and people
acting rebellious as they throw food across the street). As a group we had to
create a music video similar to the original.
I was given the role of a director and was also an actor in components of the
music video. After we then decided on the camera man and the protagonist actor and created a storyboard of our ideas. We choose a variety of locations in our
local town centre; this was a good way to get extra actors in the music video
like the original as it gets busy during the day. In the preliminary task we used
a variety of shots for an example, close ups to show the characters expressions
and emotions through the framing of the face. We also used wide shots to enable
the audience to see the surroundings and mid shots to show the detail. Using
panning from different shots allows the audience to be engaged. Using the Nikon
camera, we also used different camera angles from high to low. At the beginning
the scenery shots of the birds flying and the camera looking up the building,
the use of the low angle shots makes the subject look strong and powerful. This
was also used at 1:14 as the singer has a direct mode of address looking down
at the camera creating a sense of authority. There are multiple actors in this
music video with different ages, races and gender which increases the
representation and diversity.
Unfortunately, the funding used in my music video is low and we were
unable to use a Steadicam or hire actors to perform as drunk adults, kids
playing, homeless people or even disabled like the original music video.
Instead we used a dolly and filmed our music video on a Nikon d3500, due to the
floor being uneven the footage looked shaky in certain areas of the video, using
premiere Pro I stabilised the video as much as I could.
I edited the
music video on Adobe Premiere Pro, to have a better knowledge on the editing app I watched YouTube tutorials to
have a better understanding. After, this I watched over the clips we videoed
and cut the shots down to fit the time. I then used different transitions to make
the clips look smoother and blend into one another well. I also changed the
speed in different places of my music video at 0.27 I made the clip slower to
make it look more serious as she has a direct mode of address. I also used colour treatment making the video have a blue tone and
dark saturated colours. I decided to do this because I wanted the video to have
enigma as though she is suspicious. Furthermore, to make her look more
suspicious every person she walks past disappears I done this by cutting and
combining clips. Other effects were also used, and I added credits at the end showing
the roles we had. When I was finished and happy with the outcome, I rendered my
music video and exported it to my YouTube account, I selected the resolution and
frame rate of the video as I worked in 1080p HD.
Overall,
I liked the outcome of the music video, however, to improve the technical code
for my final music video I will have time to check whether the flooring has a smooth
surface for the Dollie. I will also like to learn more editing techniques to
make my music video look more professional.
